NHS Health Check
If you’re aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP or local council every 5 years.

Hepatitis C Screening
Hepatitis C is a virus that affects your liver. It can be cured by taking a course of tablets. You can do a simple test at home to find out if you have hepatitis C.

Lung Cancer Screening
The Lung Cancer Screening Programme is a new cancer screening service to check if you have lung cancer. It is available to everyone who is registered with a Sunderland or South Tyneside GP, is aged between 55 and 74 years of age and who is a current or ex-smoker.

Bowel Screening
NHS bowel cancer screening checks if you could have bowel cancer. You use a home test kit, called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT), to collect a small sample of poo and send it to a lab. This is checked for tiny amounts of blood.

Cervical Screening
Cervical screening is offered to women and people with a cervix from the ages of 25 to 64. Cervical screening is a free health test that is designed to detect abnormal cells in the cervix that could develop into cancer, if left untreated.

AAA Screening
Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening is for men aged 65 and over. It’s also called AAA screening. It’s a simple, risk-free ultrasound scan.
The test is only offered to men. This is because they’re 6 times more likely to have an abdominal aortic aneurysm than women.

Breast Screening
The Gateshead Breast Screening Service is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It covers multiple areas including Sunderland. Breast screening is the best way to detect breast cancers early as this is when they are more easily treatable and before any signs or symptoms appear.
